The Frankel FR-II extends the FR-I design by adding an anterior bite guide component for Class II Division 1 cases with both large overjet (>6mm) and deep overbite (>50%). It simultaneously addresses sagittal and vertical discrepancies.
Components
• All FR-I components (shields, pads, wires) • Anterior Bite Guide — Added acrylic platform behind upper incisors • Lingual Wire — Behind upper incisors to prevent incisor tipping during treatment • Reinforced Palatal Bow — Stronger 1.2mm wire for the additional forces
How It Works
In addition to the FR-I mechanism, the anterior bite guide discludes posterior teeth, allowing passive eruption and bite opening. The lingual wire prevents unwanted incisor proclination during the sagittal correction phase. Combined effect: overjet reduction + overbite correction.
Digital Workflow
Same workflow as FR-I, with these additions: 1. Wax the anterior bite guide at the prescribed vertical thickness 2. Position lingual wire 2mm behind upper incisors at the gingival third 3. Verify bite guide contacts on articulator 4. QC: Bite guide thickness, lingual wire clearance, combined FR-I checks
Manufacturing Standard
• All FR-I standards apply • Bite guide: Minimum 2mm PMMA, smooth surface contacting lower incisors • Lingual wire: 1.0mm SS, 2mm clearance from incisor lingual surfaces • QC: Combined FR-I + bite guide verification
