The Split Plate is the simplest form of removable expansion appliance — a basic acrylic baseplate divided at the midline with an expansion screw. It is the foundation of all removable expansion therapy.
Components
• Split Acrylic Baseplate — Left and right halves • Midline Expansion Screw — Standard screw, 0.25mm/quarter-turn • Adams Clasps — 0.8mm SS wire (optional) • Labial Bow — 0.7mm SS wire (optional)
How It Works
Identical to the Schwarz principle — screw activation separates the baseplate halves, delivering transverse forces to the teeth. The simpler design (fewer wire components) makes it faster to fabricate and lower cost, but offers less retention than a full Schwarz appliance.
