The Hyrax Rapid Palatal Expander is a fixed, banded appliance for skeletal maxillary expansion. Daily activation of 0.5-1.0mm opens the mid-palatal suture — achieving orthopedic expansion rather than dental tipping.
Components
• Stainless Steel Bands — On first molars and first premolars • Hyrax Screw — Heavy-duty expansion screw, 0.25mm/quarter-turn • Wire Framework — 1.2mm SS wire connecting bands to screw • Smooth Palatal Bar — Avoids tissue impingement
How It Works
Rapid activation (0.5-1.0mm per day) exceeds the rate of physiologic suture adaptation, causing the mid-palatal suture to separate. This achieves true skeletal expansion of the maxilla, not just dental tipping. The force is delivered through the teeth to the maxillary bones.
Digital Workflow
1. Intraoral scans 2. 3D-print model 3. Fit bands on first molars and premolars 4. Position Hyrax screw — close to palate, parallel to occlusal plane 5. Solder wire framework connecting bands to screw 6. Polish and finish 7. QC: Screw function, band fit, solder integrity
Manufacturing Standard
• Screw: Hyrax expansion screw, stainless steel, heavy-duty • Bands: Stainless steel, preformed • Wire: 1.2mm ASTM F899 SS • Activation: 0.5-1.0mm per day (2-4 quarter-turns) • Maximum expansion: 10-12mm • QC: Screw torque test, band adaptation, weld inspection
